Basic Hydraulics
This module explains the basic principles of hydraulics. It discusses stroke, distance, and applied force, relative to typical hydraulic systems in pulp & paper mills. It also explains hydraulic systems and their associated components, along with a discussion of operational responsibilities for hydraulic systems.
Compressors
This module introduces concepts important to understanding compressors. It discusses the mechanics of gases including pressure, vacuum, and the relationships between temperature, pressure, and volume. It features examples of compressed air systems with discussions about several types of positive displacement and dynamic compressors. It also reviews the auxiliary components needed to support a facility’s compressed air supply.
Cooling Water
This module provides the learner with basic Power Engineering theory regarding the design and operation of cooling water systems. It discusses water chemistry, cooling tower, corrosion, microbiological fouling, and treatment programs.
Lock Out / Tag Out
This module reviews and explains the requirements of the Isolations Lock Out/Tag Out Practice, and Safe Work Practice. It achieves this by expanding on documents found in the Practice and in other documents related to isolations.
Lubrication
This module describes the need to understand lubrication as well as the methods and principles of lubrication. It also covers safety issues related to lubricants. It discusses different types of lubricants used in plants including many properties of and additives to lubricants. The module takes a look at types of lubrication system designs used in industry and some components, such as oil coolers and reservoirs. The module concludes with a look at the operation of lubrication systems.
Pneumatics
This module introduces pneumatic applications, components, and systems. It takes a look at pipe, fittings, and hoses used in pneumatic systems. It discusses pneumatic components including various types of valves, motors, and turbines. The module also presents a simple pneumatic circuit and a pneumatic safety circuit to illustrate the theory and operation of pneumatic equipment.
Pump Basics
This module covers centrifugal and positive displacement pumps. It explains the theory of centrifugal pumping, and discusses different types of centrifugal pumps. It discusses mechanical seals and stuffing boxes, as well as operational differences. It also shows and explains different types of positive displacement pumps. It explains the correct operating and troubleshooting principles for centrifugal and positive displacement pumps as well.
Turbines
This module provides a generic introduction to steam turbines, showing and explaining large and small types, as well as different blading types. It discusses turbine seals, lube, control, and stop valves. It also identifies and explains operational principles.
Power Transmission
This module discusses some industrial standards and basic working principles of power transmission equipment to inform the learner that there is a variety of components that can be used to perform a particular power transmission function. It discusses direct mechanical lock-up and gearboxes as well as bearings and seals.
